The meal can be perfect, the decoration sumptuous, the lighting careful: if the sound is bad, the entire atmosphere of your wedding will suffer. Inaudible speeches, soft dance floor, neighbors complaining about saturation... the choice of sound system cannot be improvised. Good news: you don't need to be a sound engineer to properly size your installation. This practical guide explains, step by step, how to choose the right speakers for your venue and your number of guests.

Understanding the needs of a marriage

A wedding is not a simple dance evening: it is a succession of moments with very different sound requirements. Size the power according to the number of guests

The power of the speakers, expressed in watts, must be adapted to the size of your audience and your room. An undersized sound system will saturate and tire the ear; oversized, it will be unnecessarily bulky. Here are some practical guidelines:

  • Up to 50 guests: A pair of compact powered speakers is usually enough to cover the space.
  • 50 to 150 guests: plan a pair of more powerful speakers, ideally supplemented with a subwoofer for the dance floor.
  • Beyond 150 guests: a larger system, or even several broadcast points, becomes necessary for uniform coverage.

One reservation, when reading the technical sheets: the peak power displayed by the manufacturers is always higher than what the speaker actually delivers continuously. This is a commercial figure, not a promise of use. Compare models on the same basis and, if in doubt, allow for a margin: a sound system that works below its limits delivers cleaner, more reliable sound.

Interior or exterior: two different logics

The location changes everything. Indoors, walls reflect sound: moderate power is often enough, but be careful with the acoustics of large rooms which can generate reverberation. Outdoors, the sound is dispersed without anything to return it: more power and careful placement of the speakers are needed to cover the space.

The acoustics of the place are as important as its surface area. A village hall with bare concrete walls sends sound in all directions: the music becomes blurred and the ears tire quickly. Conversely, curtains, drapes and tablecloths naturally absorb some of the reflections and make the sound more readable. A marquee behaves differently from a solid building. Visit the location in advance, if possible at a quiet time: a visit to the site is enough to identify areas where broadcasting will be difficult.

Also think about practical constraints: access to electricity, protection of equipment in the event of bad weather, and authorized noise level depending on the location and time. An outdoor evening wedding may be subject to neighborhood rules that are best anticipated.

Don't forget the microphone and sources

The sound system is not just about the speakers. For speeches, thank yous and entertainment, a quality microphone is essential - preferably wireless, for freedom of movement. As for music, plan the source that corresponds to your evening:

  • Standalone playlist: a simple player connected to the speakers can be enough for a controlled atmosphere.

  • Live group: plan appropriate entrances and stage feedback.

Always check the compatibility of the connectors (XLR for professional equipment, RCA or jack for consumer sources) before the big day.

Take care of light as much as sound

The light carries the atmosphere on par with the music. For a wedding, stick to elegant lighting: warm white LED projectors to highlight the decoration and the tables, a few ambient sources to color the walls, possibly a starry effect on the ceiling. Save the most spectacular effects for the peak of the dance party: used all night long, they tire the eye and break the refinement of the whole thing.

Install and adjust your sound system on the big day

A few good practices make all the difference on the day of the event:

  • Raise the floor-standing speakers to broadcast the sound above the crowd and not behind the guests' backs.
  • Direct them toward the dance floor, not direct them toward the eating areas during dinner.
  • Do a sound test beforehand, in an empty room and then with a few people: a filled space absorbs more sound.
  • Keep some power reserve for the peak of the evening, without pushing the volume to maximum from the start.

Finally, anticipate how the day will unfold: the ceremony system is installed and adjusted at the start of the afternoon, the speakers are repositioned for the reception, then the main system for the evening is set up and tested before the guests arrive. Above all, entrust these transitions to a clearly identified person: this is what prevents the music from stopping at the wrong moment while everyone waits for someone to take care of it.

A gradual adjustment throughout the evening, which follows the increase in energy, is always better than a fixed volume.
