Design and handling
The X5 retains the elongated format of the range, on a chassis that is significantly more robust than that of its predecessor. The lenses are made of tempered glass - and above all replaceable by the user, with the support of an official kit, which solves the fear of any 360 camera: the scratch on a curved lens. The rear touch screen is larger and remains readable in direct sunlight, a detail that matters more in the field than a line of technical sheet.
Getting started is immediate. The physical buttons start recording without going through the screen, and the menus are those of the X4: no adaptation time if you already know the range. The 200 grams remain perfectly balanced at the end of a pole.
Video quality: a real leap forward
The X5 marks a clear break with previous generations. Its 1/1.28 inch sensors (compared to 1/2 inch on the X4 ) capture more light, which translates concretely into:
- Less noise in low light: night and indoor scenes become usable without heavy post-processing.
- Extended dynamic range: skies are no longer burned when the ground is correctly exposed.
- More natural colors: image processing favors tones faithful to reality rather than excessive saturation.
In 8K 360, the level of detail allows aggressive cropping in post-production without visible loss. The principle is simple and powerful: you film everything around you, then you choose the desired 16:9 or 9:16 framing afterwards, and the final result remains sharp in 4K.
The AI chip, the real discreet novelty
The least spectacular progress on paper is the one that is most noticeable in use. The X5 has three chips – two dedicated to imaging, an AI chip engraved in 5 nm – which process the image in real time, in the camera. Concretely:
- selective denoising, particularly effective when light is lacking;
- automatic color and contrast correction;
- an almost perfect assembly of the two hemispheres, including on complex and very eventful scenes, where the seam was once visible.
Above all, the processing which required several minutes per clip on the X4 becomes almost instantaneous: you recover files ready to crop instead of waiting. Over a day of filming, the time saving is considerable.
Stabilization and invisible pole
FlowState stabilization combines hardware gyroscope and software algorithm to produce stunningly smooth footage. Run, jump, ride a bike: the horizon remains straight and the image stable, without mechanical stabilizer.
The “invisible boom” mode is still stunning: the handle completely disappears from the image and the camera seems to float in the air. An immediately spectacular effect for social networks.
Waterproofing and robustness for everyday use
With its IPX8 certification up to 15 meters, the X5 is among the most aquatic 360 cameras: no housing necessary for recreational diving, snorkeling or water sports, and 60 meters with the diving housing. The anti-fog treated lenses cope well with hot-cold transitions, when leaving the water for example. On a daily basis, this seriousness of manufacturing reassures: it is a device designed for the field, not for a shelf.
