Where to film in France
Camera and drone rental in Grenoble: where to film

Grenoble is filmed surrounded by mountains. Three massifs frame the city, Chartreuse, Vercors and Belledonne, and change colour with every hour of the day. Old Grenoble huddles around its squares, while the cable car climbs up to the Bastille fort. This guide gives practical pointers for shooting here, between a dense city and big Alpine relief. The immediate closeness of high peaks gives Grenoble a backdrop few cities of its size can offer, visible from almost every crossroads.
Where to film in Grenoble
- The Bastille fort, reached by cable car above the centre: a 360-degree view over the city and the three massifs around it. An Insta360 X6 covers the whole panorama in a single shot. The ride up in the cable car’s distinctive bubbles is also worth it for a shot filmed from the cabin.
- Old Grenoble, around Place Grenette and Place aux Herbes: narrow lanes, café terraces and old façades, good ground for a walking vlog.
- The Musée de Grenoble and the sculpture park next to it, between contemporary architecture and shady paths.
- The confluence of the Isère and the Drac, on the edge of the city: fast-flowing water, open banks and lines leading towards the mountains. The flow and colour of the water change markedly with the seasons, a detail that makes every shoot a little different.
- The Parc Paul-Mistral, with the Perret tower in the background: large green spaces at the heart of the metropolitan area.
- The streets of the Saint-Laurent quarter, on the other bank of the Isère, backing onto the Bastille hill, for a different viewpoint on the centre. The stairways and vaulted passages linking the lanes offer natural transitions between two shots.
- The Sainte-Claire market, under its covered halls in the city centre, lively early in the morning with its colourful stalls and the old façades all around.
Drone in Grenoble: what is allowed
In France, recreational flying is prohibited over built-up areas and gatherings of people, prohibited near airports, here Grenoble-Alpes-Isère airport, and in national parks and nature reserves. Flight height is capped at 120 metres and the drone must stay in direct line of sight. Before each flight, the Géoportail map is the reference for checking the area you will fly over. Around Grenoble, the farming valleys outside the built-up area, away from protected massifs, offer open spaces to be checked case by case before taking off. Our drones weigh less than 250 grams, but they carry a camera: before the first flight, the renter registers free of charge as an operator (on AlphaTango if resident in France) and displays their own operator number on the drone.
What equipment to rent for Grenoble
For the lanes of old Grenoble and the lively terraces, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P is held in one hand and steadies every move. For a wide shot of the massifs, from a valley outside the built-up area, a drone such as the DJI Mini 5 Pro captures the relief of all three massifs in a single flight, once the zone has been checked. Hiking in the surrounding mountains, a GoPro Hero 12 Black withstands knocks and damp better than a conventional camera. The Insta360 X6 remains useful for a cable-car ride filmed in 360 degrees, with the framing chosen afterwards.
When to film: events and seasons in Grenoble
In winter, snow on the three massifs frames the city in crisp white, visible from almost every street in the centre. Spring brings back clear light and full terraces around Place Grenette. In summer, long evenings let you film the sunset over the Chartreuse from the Bastille. Depending on the year, Grenoble also hosts trail races in the surrounding mountains and street events in the city centre, two chances to film a city on the move, between athletes and onlookers. Autumn colours the beech woods of the surrounding massifs before the first snow, a short but clear window for contrast shots between russet leaves and already white peaks.
