Insta360 X4, X5 or X6: which one to rent?

We rent the X4, the X5 and, since 27 August 2026, the X6, and the question comes up every week. Here's what really separates them — starting with two errors that are circulating about X6, because they distort the comparison from the start.

Two mistakes not to be made again

The first: you will read that the X6 has “1-inch sensors”. This is false. The official sheet announces two square, custom-designed Sony sensors, measuring 1/1.1 inch, open to F2.0. Insta360 presents them as “33% larger” than those in X5, with “4× light per image.” That’s already a lot; it's not an inch. The error comes from a specialized media and has spread as is.

The second: some reseller sheets advertise “up to 11 m” of waterproofing. The manufacturer announces IP68 and 20 m without box, and up to 60 m with the dedicated accessory.

Two caveats to this chart. The autonomy is not read line by line: that of the X4 is measured in a less demanding mode than the other two, and that of the X6 is given at 25°C. And the “undocumented” box means what it says: we did not find the data on the official file, we are not guessing it.

What X6 really brings

• Light. Larger sensors, 14.5 apertures announced compared to 13.5, and a PureVideo mode which goes up to 8K/30 for dark scenes.
• Fluidity. 8K goes from 30 to 50 frames per second, 4K goes up to 100, and single-lens mode reaches 4K at 120 frames per second.
• Material for calibration. 10 bits, I-Log profile, native Dolby Vision, and a bitrate that climbs to 240 Mb/s in H.265.

Insta360 also documents a “Triple AI Chip System”: a Qualcomm chip engraved in 4nm and two dedicated imaging chips, responsible for processing, assembling the two images and stabilization. This is official information, not a rumor - we verified it on the manufacturer's page.

On the other hand, two terms that will be sold to you and that you will not find on the X6 sheet: “FlowState” and “360° Horizon Lock”. They are available from resellers; the official page talks about a 6-axis gyroscope and InstaFrame 2.0. We will not sell you a trade name that the manufacturer does not use itself.

So, which one to take?

• The X4 if you are filming during the day, outdoors, and the editing will be done on the phone. It achieves the same maximum 360 definition as the X5 – 8K at 30 frames/s – and it is the cheapest of the three for the day. This is the argument that the technical sheet does not say.
• The X5 if you want the intermediate sensor and replaceable lenses without upgrading to the most recent generation.
• The X6 if the light is low (indoors, end of day, evening), if you are calibrating your images, or if you are filming fast movement where the 50 frames/s in 8K are visible.

What we don't know yet

The X6 was released on August 12, 2026. At the time of writing, no full independent review has been published – neither in French, nor elsewhere to our knowledge. We cannot therefore tell you anything about its heating during prolonged use, the real quality of the assembly of the two images in difficult cases, nor its reliability over time.
