Rent or buy a 360 camera: the threshold in days

Purchase prices, taken from the manufacturer

On the European Insta360 store, the standard X4 bundle is €475.99 and the X5 bundle €589.99. The detail matters: the X4 bundle holds the camera and a standard lens guard, with no microSD card; the X5 bundle holds the camera and one battery. Nothing else, either way. Those two figures, and only those, are what you divide.

There is no single threshold — there is one per rental pattern

A rental is not billed as a daily rate times a duration: each duration has its own tier, a total, and the average day gets lighter as the duration stretches. On both cameras, the average day of a one-month rental works out at less than a quarter of what the same day costs on its own. The direct consequence: the price of the new bundle is reached after a wildly different number of days depending on whether you rent three days at a time or a full week. Here are those cumulative days — counted in whole rentals, since you cannot rent a third of a weekend.

The table says something else too: on the X4, the second day is free — one day and two days are billed identically. The same holds for the GoPro HERO 11 Black. That changes how the first row reads: booking a single day makes no sense on the X4, and its eleven rentals actually give you up to twenty-two shooting days if you take both days every time. The X4's day-by-day threshold is therefore counted in rentals, not in days of use. And days are counted inclusively, pick-up day and return day both included: Friday to Sunday is three days, not two.

The reversal: the pricier one breaks even first

The X5 costs €114 more than the X4 to buy, and yet it reaches its break-even point sooner: six full weeks, or forty-two days, against eight weeks and fifty-six days for the X4. There is nothing mysterious about it — from two rental days onwards, the rate gap between the two models is wider than the gap in new price: around 30 % at two days, 37 % at three, 52 % by the week, against 24 % at purchase. The first day is the exception, and precisely because the X4 already throws in the second one: on that single tier the rental gap falls below 5 %. So the shortcut “the cheapest to buy is the one to buy” does not hold. Remember the shared floor instead: up to five full weeks of cumulative shooting a year — thirty-five days — renting stays ahead on both models. Rent day by day, though, and the threshold collapses to about a dozen rentals: it is the slicing, not the camera, that decides.

What the purchase price leaves out

This is where the raw comparison lies. Our X5 pack ships with the camera, its battery, a twin charger, a 1 TB SanDisk microSD card, a hard carry case, a 25 W fast charger and a 1.10 m invisible selfie stick — the accessory without which a 360 camera never delivers what it promises.

Buy instead, and the memory card, the second battery, the charger and the stick all pile onto the bill, and the X4 bundle is explicitly sold without a memory card. So the real entry price is not the one on the product page, and the thresholds in the table are in fact floors: they favour buying more than they should.

The argument a salesperson will never give you

The camera you buy ages; the one you rent does not. As of 14 August 2026, the GoPro France store lists the HERO13 Black, the HERO12 Black, the MAX and MAX2, the LIT HERO and the Mission range: the HERO11 Black is no longer there.

We still rent it out, and it films exactly what it filmed on day one. But whoever bought it new now owns a camera dropped from the manufacturer's catalogue, resellable at a fraction of its price. Renting puts that depreciation on someone else's books. That, along with damage and theft insurance included in the rate, is the real difference between the two options — not the size of the first day's bill.

The same holds for 360: the Insta360 X6 is now in our catalogue, and it films in 8K at up to 50 frames per second where the X5 caps at 30 fps in that resolution. Whoever bought an X5 keeps that gap; whoever rents books the other camera next time.

When buying wins, and it really does win

Refusing to say so would be dishonest. Past six to eight weeks of shooting a year — forty-two days on the X5, fifty-six on the X4, or if you need the camera overnight with no warning, buying becomes the rational call. That is the creator publishing every week, not two trips and a wedding.

The method fits in one line and you can redo it yourself: take the price of the new bundle at the manufacturer, divide it by the rate shown on our product page for the duration you actually rent, round up to the next whole rental — you cannot rent a third of a weekend — then multiply by that duration. The result is your threshold, in days. The only missing figure is yours: how many days will you really be filming this year?
