Angers is filmed along the Maine, between a fortified castle and green neighbourhoods. The city is known for its planted spaces and the soft light of the Loire valley, with an old centre huddled around the castle of the Dukes of Anjou. This guide gives practical pointers for shooting in Angers, between medieval heritage and nature in the city. The centre is easy to explore on foot, between the banks of the Maine and cobbled lanes, which leaves time to come back to a spot at another hour.

Where to film in Angers

  • The Château d’Angers, its ramparts and towers of stone and slate above the Maine: a must for an opening shot. An Insta360 X6 takes in the whole length of the ramparts without endless back-and-forth. Inside, the Apocalypse Tapestry gallery is worth a visit, even if filming there stays discreet.
  • The Doutre quarter, half-timbered houses and cobbled squares on the other bank of the Maine: good ground for a walking vlog, between overhanging upper floors and timber frames leaning with age.
  • Place du Ralliement and the grand theatre next to it, the lively shopping heart of the city centre.
  • Saint-Maurice cathedral, its narrow façade and twin towers, visible from several points in the centre.
  • Place du Pilori and Rue Saint-Aubin, with their tightly packed half-timbered houses and old shop signs, a typical scene of old Angers.
  • The Lac de Maine, a few minutes from the centre: open water, tree-lined banks, a calm that suits a steady wide shot.
  • The Jardin des Plantes, large lawns and rare species, one of the many green spaces that earned Angers its reputation as a garden city. The flower beds are renewed with the seasons, so there is always a different bloom to film up close, between old greenhouses and remarkable trees.

Drone in Angers: what is allowed

In France, recreational flying is prohibited over built-up areas and gatherings of people, prohibited near airports, here Angers-Loire airport, and in national parks and nature reserves. Flight height is capped at 120 metres and the drone must stay in direct line of sight. Before each flight, the Géoportail map is the reference for checking the area you will fly over. Around Angers, the banks of the Maine and the farmland outside the built-up area offer open spaces, to be checked case by case before taking off, especially along the nearby Loire. Our drones weigh less than 250 grams, but they carry a camera: before the first flight, the renter registers free of charge as an operator (on AlphaTango if resident in France) and displays their own operator number on the drone.

What equipment to rent for Angers

In the lanes of the Doutre and around Place du Ralliement, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P steadies every shot without bulky gear. To fly over the farmland outside the built-up area, once the zone has been checked, the DJI Mini 5 Pro handles wide shots at a low weight. For a 360-degree visit of the Château d’Angers, the Insta360 X5 lets you reframe every shot after filming. By the water or on an active outing, a GoPro Hero 12 Black takes damp and splashes in its stride.

When to film: events and seasons in Angers

Spring shows off the flower beds of the Jardin des Plantes and the lawns of the Lac de Maine, in keeping with the city’s green reputation. In summer, the Festival d’Anjou stages open-air theatre in heritage sites, a chance to film façades that are otherwise closed to the public. Les Accroche-Cœurs also bring street shows to the city centre over several days, with dense crowds and temporary sets to capture from the ground. In autumn, low sunlight on the Maine and the castle towers creates reflections you do not get in high summer. The nearby Anjou vineyards turn colour at the same time, with rows of vines going yellow and russet.
