Where to film in France
Camera and drone rental in Dijon: where to film

Dijon is filmed in golden stone and half-timbering. The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy sits at the heart of the city, surrounded by a dense historic centre, while the vineyards begin just a few minutes beyond the last tram stop. This guide gives practical pointers for shooting in Dijon, between Burgundian heritage and the wine route. The old town can be explored on foot in a morning, which leaves time to come back to a spot in different light.
Where to film in Dijon
- The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy and Place de la Libération, with its semicircle of classical façades: beautiful light late in the day. An Insta360 X6 takes in the whole semicircle in a single shot, without a cut. The gilded railings and the main courtyard add useful foreground elements to break up a frame that is too wide.
- Saint-Bénigne cathedral and its crypt, with the church of Notre-Dame de Dijon and its carved owl not far away, a must in the old town. The owl, carved into the corner of a buttress, is filmed up close, right against the stone.
- The Halles quarter, iron market halls and shopping streets around them, lively in the morning. The colourful stalls and awnings contrast nicely with the pale stone of the neighbouring façades.
- The Jardin Darcy, at the entrance to the historic centre, with its stone polar bear and shady paths.
- The private mansions of the Antiquaires quarter, between Place Notre-Dame and the church of Saint-Michel, with their inner courtyards and carved façades, less busy than the main thoroughfare.
- The Route des Grands Crus, which starts at the gates of Dijon: rows of vines as far as the eye can see, gentle slopes, golden light late in the day.
- The Parc de la Colombière, wide tree-lined avenues, good ground for a steady wide shot.
Drone in Dijon: what is allowed
In France, recreational flying is prohibited over built-up areas and gatherings of people, prohibited near airports, here Dijon-Bourgogne airport, and in national parks and nature reserves. Flight height is capped at 120 metres and the drone must stay in direct line of sight. Before each flight, the Géoportail map is the reference for checking the area you will fly over. Around Dijon, the vineyards and farmland outside the built-up area offer open spaces, to be checked case by case before taking off. Our drones weigh less than 250 grams, but they carry a camera: before the first flight, the renter registers free of charge as an operator (on AlphaTango if resident in France) and displays their own operator number on the drone.
What equipment to rent for Dijon
In the lanes of the historic centre and around the Halles, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P follows every move without a jolt. To fly over the vineyards outside the built-up area, once the zone has been checked, the DJI Mini 4 Pro covers the rows of vines and the ridgelines without excess weight. For a complete 360-degree visit of Place de la Libération, the Insta360 X5 lets you choose the final angle after the shoot, handy for a place you only film once. A GoPro Hero 12 Black completes the kit for quick shots on foot, in the Halles or the Jardin Darcy.
When to film: events and seasons in Dijon
The grape harvest in autumn livens up the vineyards at the city’s gates: colourful rows, paths and slopes under low, warm light. The Dijon International Gastronomic Fair draws a dense crowd every year over several days, with stands and activities best filmed at ground level rather than from above. In winter, the pale stone of the historic centre’s façades responds well to cold, direct light. Spring brings back café terraces and open-air markets around the Halles, a livelier city than on a winter weekday. The wine and vine festival also brings the city together around its winemaking traditions, with parades and stalls to film at ground level.
