Drone at the seaside: rules and tips for filming

Aerial images of the coastline are among the most spectacular that a drone can offer. Chalk cliffs, crashing waves, deserted beaches in the early morning, lighthouses facing the ocean: the French coast reveals, seen from the sky, breathtaking landscapes. But before taking off your aircraft, it is better to know the rules specific to coastal areas — and adopt the right reflexes to protect your equipment from the sea air.

Regulations in coastal areas

The French coastline has numerous regulated zones. Military ports, coastal airfields, nature reserves and supervised swimming areas are generally prohibited for overflight. Before each flight, systematically consult reference tools such as Géoportail, which map the restrictions in force. A few minutes of verification avoids many disappointments.

At the seaside, certain common sense rules are required in addition to the general framework:

• Never fly over swimmers or swimming areas
• Avoid crowded beaches in peak season
• Respect protected areas and ornithological reserves

Low tide. The retreat of the sea reveals fascinating patterns seen from the sky: rocks, natural pools, banks of algae creating abstract textures. In Brittany as in Normandy, high tides radically transform the landscape in just a few hours.

The essential aerial shots of the coast

• The reveal: start from a tight shot – a rock, a wave – then move away to reveal the grandeur of the landscape
• Top-down: vertical view of crashing waves, rocks and sand patterns
• Lateral tracking: follow the coast line in parallel flight for a fluid tracking effect
• The drone: take off in front of you while going backwards and upwards simultaneously, to fit into the scenery

Alternating these four shots is enough to compose a varied and rhythmic video, which restores both the intimacy of the detail and the breadth of the panorama.

Protect your drone from salt and wind

The sea air is loaded with salt, which is corrosive to electronics. After each seaside flight, gently wipe your drone with a slightly damp cloth. Also avoid taking off from sand, the grain of which can infiltrate the engines: prefer a hard and stable surface.

Finally, the wind deserves special vigilance. By the sea, it is often stronger and more irregular than inland. Even if recent drones tolerate a certain breeze, choose calm days: you will gain image stability as well as flight safety.
