Insta360 X6 when traveling: the minimum kit

4 min readL'équipe Fox Rider
The minimum kit for a 360 camera when traveling: hard case, camera, two batteries, charger and pole

The minimum kit for a 360 camera while traveling fits in the rigid case provided with the rental: the camera, two batteries, a charger, a memory card, and the selfie stick. The real trap isn't the weight of the bag, it'sthe rule of lithium batteries on airplanes— and it's measured in watt-hours, a unit that no one reads on their accessories before recording. Here's the calculation, and the kit that really does the job.

The rule for lithium batteries, in three thresholds

It's the same for all companies because it stems from international regulations for the transport of dangerous goods. Non-negotiable starting point:A spare lithium battery, i.e., one not installed in a device, is prohibited in the hold.It travels in the cabin, protected terminals, in its case or with adhesive tape on the contacts.

Battery energyIn the cabinIn the hold
Less than 100 WhAuthorized without any action requiredProhibited if it is a spare
From 100 to 160 WhPrior agreement from the company, maximum two unitsForbidden
More than 160 WhProhibited in passenger baggageForbidden

The good news: an action camera battery is only a few watt-hours, far below the first threshold. You can carry several without any formalities, as long as they are in your hand luggage.

The calculation to make before slipping an external battery into your bag

The problem lies with the external battery, which almost never displays its energy level in watt-hours. The conversion is simple:Watt-hours = milliampere-hours ÷ 1000 × nominal voltageand the nominal voltage of a lithium-ion cell is 3.7 volts.

Apply it to the 30,000 mAh external battery we offer as an add-on: 30 × 3.7 =111 WhIt therefore falls into the 100 to 160 Wh range, which requires prior approval from the airline and is limited to two units. A 20,000 mAh battery, on the other hand, comes out at 74 Wh and passes without any further request. This simple calculation avoids an unpleasant scene at the security checkpoint.

Two simple steps complete the calculation, and they take thirty seconds when packing. Protect the terminals of each spare battery with its original case or a piece of tape: this is exactly what security checks, and it prevents a short circuit in a full suitcase. Keep them all together in the same carry-on bag rather than scattered across several pockets—if asked, you can simply point them out.

What the package already contains, and what we add

Every camera rental comes with the same base, included in the price: a 1TB microSD card, a 1.10m telescopic pole, a battery, a dual charger, a 25W fast charger, and a rigid carrying case. A terabyte counts more than it seems when traveling: it saves you from having to empty cards every night in accommodations without a computer.

  • An extra battery, €2. The only addition we consistently recommend for a full day of walking or driving.
  • The invisible diving protection 60 m, €3, whenever there is sea, pool or river on the agenda.
  • Backpack strap attachment, €1: the most useful hiking tool, hands-free, shoulder height.
  • The 30cm tripod, €2, for night shots and timelapses from a balcony.

What we leave at home

The 3-meter pole: it's excellent on the ground, but impossible to manage in carry-on luggage. The headphone mount: it's an adhesive consumable, only useful for a specific purpose. And the computer, if your trip is short—cropping works very well from a phone, as shown.this tutorial on editing with the application.

One last point, the one that is systematically forgotten upon returning:the memory card comes back with the equipmentRetrieve your files before resealing the package, either to a computer or a hard drive, because a full 1TB card is erased before the next rental. This is the only irreversible action involved in renting a camera.

The Insta360 X6 has been in the catalog since 27 August 2026, with the same accessory base. You can rent the Insta360 X6 today. If its dates are already taken, the Insta360 X5 and the Insta360 X4 are going on tour today; and if you're packing more than just the camera, our travel filming settings are a useful addition to this kit.

On the practical side — deposit, duration, collection on site in Lyon or delivery — everything is gathered in Renting a Insta360 X6 in Lyon: instructions for use.
