Is your phone enough when traveling?
Let's start with the honest answer: yes, most of the time your phone is enough. It films in 4K, it stabilizes, it focuses on its own, it's already in your pocket and you know how to use it. For a market, a terrace, a leisurely hike or a sunset plan, renting anything would be an unnecessary expense. The real question is therefore not “phone or camera”, but: at what precise moments does a phone pick up, and are these moments part of your trip?
Cases where the telephone wins, without discussion
It wins wherever you have to take the camera out quickly, frame it by hand and go again. It wins on posed shots, in correct light, when no one is likely to jostle you. It also benefits from editing: the rushes are already in the gallery, the application is already installed, the video is sent to the family group before even returning to the hotel. This fluidity has real value, and many people overestimate how many “spectacular” shots they will actually shoot.
The five situations where he picks up
- Water. Snorkeling, canyoning, boating, windy beach: it's not just a question of advertised waterproofness, it's the question of what you agree to risk. A drowned phone also means your tickets, your reservations and your contacts.
- Rapid movement. Mountain biking, skiing, motorcycle, kayaking. Holding a phone with one hand on a handlebar is not a filming plan, it is an accident in the making.
- Fixings.Helmet, chest strap, handlebars, board. The ecosystem of action camera mounts has no credible equivalent on the smartphone side.
- The shots where you are alone. No one to hold the camera, so no wide shot that includes you — or else an outstretched arm and a frame that you won't keep.
- Dust and sand. A track, a desert, a descent on dry land: these are conditions where a device sacrifices itself, and we prefer that it is not the one that contains your entire digital life.
What an action camera brings, official figures to back it up
Let’s take a concrete example rather than a promise. The GoPro HERO 12 Black is given by the manufacturer for 10 meters of waterproofing without box, and 60 meters with its protective box. Nothing about it is magic. These are just features that a phone, no matter how good it is, is not designed to offer: you don't screw a smartphone onto a helmet, you don't let it get sprayed with sand, and its manufacturer has never advertised it as a diving device. And the 360, a truly special case
There is one use that even an excellent phone cannot replace: film first, frame later. A 360 camera records the entire sphere around it, and the framing is decided during editing, once returned. On a scooter in Sicily or in a medina alley, that means never again missing the shot because you were looking the wrong way.
It is also the only simple way to obtain shots where you appear, alone, without a cameraman: the boom disappears during processing and the image looks like a drone shot at eye level. Rent rather than buy, and assume it
If your dropouts only concern two days out of fifteen — the sea trip and the mountain bike ride — buying a camera that will be used for four hours a year makes no sense. And if, when you return, you find that you have used it every day, you will at least know exactly which model to buy, which is better than guessing in the store.
A final piece of advice: don’t set out with two devices that neither of you have mastered. Grab a camera, run it two hours before you leave, and let your phone do what it already does well — the rest of the trip.
