Where to film in France
Camera and drone rental in Aix-en-Provence: where to film

Aix-en-Provence is known for its ochre stone, its fountains and the white outline of Montagne Sainte-Victoire closing off the horizon. Between the Cours Mirabeau, the narrow streets of the Mazarin quarter and the paths climbing towards Cézanne, the Provençal light changes little but hits hard. Here is where to set up your camera or drone, and which device to take depending on the spot. Cicadas set the rhythm of summer and closed shutters keep the heat out of the houses, a soundscape and a look that shape the whole shooting day.
Where to film in Aix-en-Provence
Five places that sum up the city, between ochre stone and white mountain.
- The Cours Mirabeau: century-old plane trees, four fountains and ochre façades all along its length. Film as you walk with a DJI Osmo Pocket 4P: the image stays steady even among the crowded café terraces.
- Montagne Sainte-Victoire: the same limestone ridge Cézanne painted, white in the morning sun. The paths climb fast and the wind picks up on the crest; a GoPro Hero 12 Black keeps up with the hike without flagging.
- The Mazarin quarter and Saint-Sauveur cathedral: narrow streets, private mansions, a Romanesque cloister. An Insta360 X6 captures the whole street in a single pass, handy when there is no room to step back.
- Cézanne’s studio: a walled garden, light filtered through the foliage, a discreet façade on the heights of the city. A compact camera is enough for a steady shot, without disturbing the visit.
- The market on Place Richelme: packed stalls, colourful fruit and fabrics, constant movement early in the morning. A sturdy camera that is quick to pull out means you will not miss the moment.
Drone in Aix-en-Provence: what is allowed
In France, recreational flying is prohibited over built-up areas and gatherings of people. It is also prohibited near Aix-en-Provence aerodrome, and in national parks and nature reserves. Flight height is capped at 120 metres, and the drone must always remain visible to the naked eye from the ground.
Always check the Géoportail map before taking off: it alone shows the areas actually open that day. Our drones weigh less than 250 grams, but they carry a camera: before the first flight, the renter registers free of charge as an operator (on AlphaTango if resident in France) and displays their own operator number on the drone.
Around Aix, the large farming plateaus at the foot of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, away from the hamlets, offer this kind of open space. Always check the map before every flight, even in an area that looks isolated.
What equipment to rent for Aix-en-Provence
Between ochre stone, plane trees and very contrasty Provençal light, the choice of camera depends mainly on the terrain. For the streets of the centre and the terraces of the Cours Mirabeau, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P slips into a pocket and steadies every step.
For Montagne Sainte-Victoire and its stony paths, go for the GoPro Hero 12 Black, more resistant to dust and falls than a conventional camera. For a panorama from an open spot where flying is allowed, the DJI Mini 4 Pro and the DJI Mini 5 Pro both weigh less than 250 grams.
For an immersive take on the market or a narrow street, the Insta360 X5 films in 360 degrees and lets you choose the angle after the shoot, once you are back. Also bring simple protection against the dust of the Sainte-Victoire paths, which quickly gets into a bag that is not properly closed.
When to film: events and seasons in Aix-en-Provence
Summer in Aix flattens the light at midday and stretches the shadows early in the morning and late in the day, the best times to frame the Cours Mirabeau without harsh backlight. In winter, Montagne Sainte-Victoire sometimes gets a thin layer of snow on its summit, a sharp contrast with the green pines below.
The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, devoted to opera, livens up the city in summer and fills the streets around Saint-Sauveur cathedral in the evening. At the end of the year, the santon fair sets up its stalls near the Cours Mirabeau, a colourful scene for a compact camera.
