Where to film in France
Camera and drone rental in Annecy: where to film

Annecy is known for its turquoise lake framed by mountains and its canals lined with colourful façades. Between the Palais de l’Isle, the Pont des Amours and the heights of the Semnoz, the scenery changes within a few minutes’ walk. Here is where to set up your camera or drone, and which device to take depending on the spot. The thermal wind often rises on the lake late in the morning, a useful thing to know before bringing out a gimbal or a drone.
Where to film in Annecy
Five places that sum up the city, between water, mountains and old stone.
- The Palais de l’Isle and the canals of the old town: houses with colourful shutters at water level, cobbled lanes between the canals. An Insta360 X6 captures the whole canal from one side to the other without having to step back, which is impossible in these narrow passages.
- Lake Annecy: turquoise water, mountains in the background, swimmers and pedal boats in summer. To film from the water or on a paddleboard, the GoPro Hero 12 Black takes the splashes without flinching.
- The Pont des Amours and the Jardins de l’Europe: the classic view of the lake, plane trees and lawns along the Thiou. Walk with a DJI Osmo Pocket 4P to keep the horizon level all the way to the bridge.
- The Château d’Annecy: from the ramparts, the old town and its red roofs stand out against the lake. A wide shot from this high point rounds off a sequence filmed at water level.
- The Semnoz: the road climbs to a full panorama over the lake and the Bauges, the starting point of many paragliding flights. If the location and the Géoportail map allow it, a drone conveys the full scale of the relief there.
Drone in Annecy: what is allowed
In France, recreational flying is prohibited over built-up areas and gatherings of people. It is also prohibited near Annecy Mont-Blanc airport, and in national parks and nature reserves. The maximum height remains 120 metres, and the drone must stay visible to the naked eye at all times.
The Géoportail map is the reference before every flight: it alone shows the areas open at the moment you take off. Our drones weigh less than 250 grams, but they carry a camera: before the first flight, the renter registers free of charge as an operator (on AlphaTango if resident in France) and displays their own operator number on the drone.
Around the lake, the very busy shores and the town centre are ruled out from the start. The heights of the Semnoz or more distant farmland, outside built-up areas, come closer, but always check the map before taking off, wherever you are.
What equipment to rent for Annecy
Between lake, mountains and old town, Annecy mixes terrains in a single shooting day. For the water, paddleboarding or swimming, the GoPro Hero 12 Black remains the most dependable, waterproof and compact.
For the lanes and canals, a pocket gimbal like the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P avoids shaky footage in narrow passages and on stairs. For a panorama from the Semnoz or an open spot where flying is allowed, the DJI Mini 5 Pro and the DJI Mini 4 Pro both weigh less than 250 grams.
For full immersion in the canals or from a boat, the Insta360 X5 captures the whole scene in 360 degrees, to be reframed later at your leisure.
When to film: events and seasons in Annecy
Summer fills the lake shores and brings crowds to the old town; evening light towards the Semnoz gives warm tones on the water. In winter, the peaks around the lake are covered in snow while the town centre often stays clear, a sharp contrast to film from the quays.
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival draws dense crowds, with open-air screenings by the lake. The Fête du Lac, with its fireworks show, is another summer highlight, visible from almost everywhere along the water.
Getting your equipment in Annecy
The equipment leaves by Chronopost, delivered to your home or to a pickup point anywhere in France, with the parcel arriving the day before the first day of your rental. You are ready at dawn to make the most of the light on the lake before the crowds. The return is done with the label supplied in the parcel.
In-person pickup exists only in Lyon, for those who prefer to collect the camera in person.
