The essential bindings on the snow

The choice of fixation entirely determines the angle of your images. In skiing and snowboarding, three supports cover most situations.

• The helmet attachment: glued to the top of the helmet, it offers an immersive diving point of view. In the side version, it gives a more cinematic rendering with the landscape scrolling to the side. Winter tip: warm the surface of the helmet and the adhesive pad before installation, as the cold greatly reduces adhesion.
• The chest harness (Chesty): it captures your hands, your poles and the trail in front of you. The result is more immersive than the headset view because we see the body in movement. This is the best angle to convey the sensation of speed and gliding. Tighten it firmly to avoid unwanted oscillations.
• The telescopic pole: ideal for moving selfies and low-angle shots. Choose a short model (30 to 50 cm) when skiing: a pole that is too long becomes dangerous in the event of a fall. A non-slip grip is valuable when gloves reduce grip.

Protect your camera from the cold

Cold is the number one enemy of on-board electronics. Two reflexes allow you to avoid unpleasant surprises during the session.

Anticipate the loss of autonomy

At low temperatures, a battery can lose a significant portion of its capacity. The solution: carry two to three extra batteries and keep them warm in an inside jacket pocket, close to your body. Change the battery as soon as the indicator weakens, without waiting for the cutoff.

Fight against fogging

The transition from the cold outside to the heat of a pocket creates condensation on the lens. Slip anti-fog inserts (small absorbent bags) near the camera, and possibly apply an anti-fog treatment before going out. A foggy lens can ruin an entire day of shooting.

Optimal settings for sliding

A good configuration beforehand prevents you from fumbling around with gloves on the slopes.

• Resolution and frame rate: A high frame rate is valuable in winter sports, as it opens the door to spectacular slow motion on jumps, powder turns and snow drifts. A well-placed slow motion transforms an ordinary descent into a cinematic sequence.
• Stabilization: Enable software stabilization to maximum. The ski generates a lot of vibrations that recent models absorb remarkably well.
• Field of vision: a very wide angle (SuperView type) is ideal for helmet mounting for an immersive rendering, while a more linear mode is better suited to the boom for a “cinema” look.
• Voice control: with gloves, manipulating the buttons is laborious. Voice control allows you to start and stop recording without touching the camera, providing real comfort on the slopes.

Take care of the assembly

A good ski edit relies on rhythm and variety. Alternate angles — helmet view, chest view, boom view — to avoid monotony. Save the slow motion for the big moments: jumps, sharp turns, sprays of snow. Synchronize your cuts with energetic music, and keep the duration short (two to three minutes) to maintain attention. Better a short, nervous montage than a long succession of repetitive shots.
