DJI Flip or Mini 4 Pro: which to choose?
Filming near wedding guests, a group of children or a sports team gives rise to the same reflex: look for protected propellers. The DJI Flip addresses exactly this concern. It remains to be seen what this choice costs in the face of a Mini 4 Pro, who approaches the problem from the other end.
Two 249 g drones, two ideas of security
Both devices remain under the 249 g mark and bear the European C0 marking. Both share the same 1/1.3-inch sensor and shoot 4K at up to 100 fps. In the image, the match is zero, and this is already useful information: choosing the Flip does not take you down the sensor range.
The difference is philosophical. The Flip withstands contact thanks to its foldable propeller guards which completely envelop the rotors. The Mini 4 Pro avoids contact thanks to omnidirectional obstacle detection, supplemented by a downward 3D infrared sensor.
The real advantage of Flip: contact
Comprehensive protection has no software equivalent. It reassures the people being filmed, it allows takeoff from the hand, and it transforms a touch against a branch or a curtain into a simple fright. In a room, under a tree, in the middle of a moving group, it’s a real argument, not a gimmick.
The Flip also takes off from the palm and knows how to follow its subject to keep it in the frame, which makes it a very direct device to use when no one wants to pilot.
The real advantage of Mini 4 Pro: vision
The point to know before deciding: the Flip only detects obstacles forward, by 3D infrared system, and downwards. Neither on the sides nor behind. However, collisions in events rarely occur right in front of the aircraft – they happen backwards, in lateral translation, or rising under a branch.
This is where the Mini 4 Pro regains the advantage. Its detection covers all directions: it slows down, goes around or stops, including when you back up to open a plan. For an occasional pilot, this margin of error is often better than a hull.
The match of numbers, without complacency
- Vent: DJI announces the same resistance of 10.7 m/s for both devices. Contrary to popular belief, the Flip's protections do not penalize it on this value.
- Autonomy: 31 minutes for the Flip, 34 minutes for the Mini 4 Pro. The difference is modest but real over a long day.
- Range: both use the O4 transmission, given for 8 km under CE standards on the Flip compared to 10 km on the Mini 4 Pro.
- Speed: the Flip is announced at 12 m/s in Sport mode, which is more than enough for following a walk or bike, much less for catching up with a car.
What the choice does not change
Neither frees you from the regulations, and it is a common confusion: ducted propellers are not a license to fly over people. Both aircraft being in class C0, they fly in subcategory A1, where flying over uninvolved people should be avoided as much as possible and where flying over a gathering of people is prohibited in all cases - a reception, a dance floor or a guard of honor fall into this category.
Added to the common rules: maximum height of 120 m above the ground, visual flight, and registration of the operator obligatory as long as the aircraft carries a camera. In this area, the Flip offers no shortcuts.
So, for a wedding or a party?
The Flip is not in our catalog, and we prefer to write it down than leave it guessed. If your need boils down to rotating a drone in the middle of guests, at shoulder height, in a cluttered space, it is indeed the most suitable tool on the market — and no commercial argument will change that.
But in practice, a successful wedding plan almost never revolves around the middle of the group. It is shot from a distance: arrival of the bride and groom, overview of the estate, vertical climb onto the outdoor dance floor. On these levels, protection is useless and omnidirectional detection serves a lot. Renting the Mini 4 Pro then remains the consistent choice, provided you keep a safe distance and never fly over a gathering of people, which the regulations prohibit in all cases.
