Film skiing in 360 with a Insta360 X6

In skiing, the problem has never been the camera:that's because you can't frame a descentWe film straight ahead, miss the turn our friend is taking behind us, and only discover on the way back that the best moment was off-camera. A 360 camera eliminates this problem: it records everything, and you choose the shot from the comfort of your home. The only adjustment that the snow requires

A light metering system always aims for a mid-gray. A snowy slope in full sunlight reflects far more than this gray: the camera concludes there is too much light, and renders gray snow with dark faces under goggles. The correction is counterintuitive and systematic:push the exposure compensation towards the positive, from one third to a full aperture, and check on the screen before heading out onto the slopes.

The second useful setting is frame rate. At 50 frames per second, editing at 25 fps results in slow motion that's twice as slow, frame by frame, without any software tweaking: perfect for stretching out a jump or a powder run without any jerkiness. The downside is that the memory card fills up twice as fast, which explains the 1TB microSD card included in our rentals.

Where to mount the camera, and what each point provides

One point specific to 360° video: the seam between the two lenses is the area where the joint is least sharp. Position the camera so that it's pointing towards the void, not at your face or the skier you're following. The problem of gloves remains. A touchscreen doesn't respond through mittens, and nobody takes their hands off in sub-zero temperatures to start recording. Two solutions: set everything up in the warmth before the first run and then only use the physical button, or add the €3 GPS remote control, which is worn on the wrist and triggers the recording without removing the camera from its harness.

The cold, the fog, and the two actions that saved the day

A lithium battery doesn't drain faster in very cold weather; it delivers less power: its chemistry slows down, and the device shuts off even though there's still charge remaining. Hence the action:The spare batteries travel in an inside pocket, against the body.Not in the backpack. A frozen battery, once warmed up, regains most of its capacity.

Fogging, on the other hand, arrives just when you think you're done: upon entering a mountain restaurant or a heated cable car, the humid air condenses on lenses still at minus five degrees Celsius. Second step:put the camera back in its closed case before enteringand only reopen it once the temperature has returned. The rigid case is included in the rental, so you might as well use it.

Do I need a 360 camera or a front-facing camera?

If you're filming alone, facing a slope, with a pre-determined framing, a GoPro HERO 12 Black will do the job and the file is ready to publish without any cropping. If you're filming with others, following each other, with subjects passing behind you, the 360 wins—and the Insta360 X5 is available too, if the X6 dates are already taken.
