Insta360 X6: what it does not replace

4 min readL'équipe Fox Rider
The two lenses of a 360 camera facing a drone in flight: what a 360 camera does not replace

A 360 camera records everything around it, and that's precisely what makes people think it replaces the rest of their equipment. It doesn't. The Insta360 X6 has been in our catalog since 27 August 2026; before you reserve it for a shoot, here are five things no 360 camera will do for you, and what you should rent instead. For the immersive wide-angle experience, you can reserve the Insta360 X6.

She doesn't gain any height

A 360 drone sees in 360 degrees, not 120 meters. An aerial view, a coastal flyover, a shot rising above a wedding: it's a drone, and nothing else. The framework is as much regulatory as it is technical—in the open category, European regulation 2019/947 sets the maximum flight altitude at120 meters above the nearest point to the surfaceAnd this limit structures everything a drone can capture. Ourguide to drone regulations in Francedetails the rest.

She doesn't zoom in

In 360, "zooming" means cropping within an already recorded file, thus extracting a portion of pixels. The sphere is 7,680 pixels wide for 360 degrees: a close-up shot at 60 degrees only extracts one-sixth, or 1,280 pixels—720p. This isn't a flaw; it's the very definition of the format, and it applies identically on a X4, a X5, or a X6, all of which film the same 8K sphere. A true telephoto lens, on the other hand, loses nothing.

It does not have a mechanical lift

360 camera stabilization is software-based: the camera body moves, the software selects a stable frame within the sphere, and it pays for this convenience with cropped pixels. A 3-axis gimbal, like the one for the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P which joins the catalog on the same date, does the opposite: it physically moves the lens to cancel out the movement, and nothing is removed from the image. Two opposing principles for a result that looks similar on screen—except in low light, where the software cropping is noticeable. It will then be un DJI Osmo Pocket 4P to rent in addition to the 360.

She doesn't catch up with the night

Two small sensors and two lenses with a wide field of view: that's the architecture of a 360, and it has nothing to do with that of a mirrorless camera. When the light fades, resolution becomes irrelevant; noise takes over. The subject deserves its own specific settings, which we have compiled infilming at night with an action camera.

It does not record its own sound

This is the format's blind spot. A 360 camera has its microphones positioned all around it, with no directional pickup: it captures your voice, but also the wind, your footsteps, and the conversation behind you, all at the same level. With an action camera, you plug in an external microphone or a media module. With a 360 camera, the sound is recorded separately, with a recorder or a lavalier microphone, and then synchronized during editing. If sound is crucial to your video—an interview, a speech, a tutorial—don't rely on the camera itself.

It doesn't save you time.

This is the least written but most useful point. A standard camera produces a shot; a 360 camera produces a sphere that must be cropped, shot by shot, before you have a video. Filming is faster, but editing takes considerably longer. If your constraint is to deliver the same evening, a front-facing camera is the right choice.

What you want to filmIs a 360 enough? To rent instead

None of this disqualifies 360: on its own turf—action, boom mic, subjects passing behind you—no other format performs as well. The right approach is to choose the tool based on the shot you want to capture, which our comparison...360 camera or action cameradecides on a case-by-case basis.

One last thing: these limitations are not manufacturing defects, they are the deliberate consequences of an architectural choice. Two very fast lenses mounted back to back, a body the size of a deck of cards: everything that makes a 360 camera usable with one hand prevents it from being simultaneously a drone, a telephoto lens, and a directional microphone.

On the practical side — deposit, duration, collection on site in Lyon or delivery — everything is gathered in Renting a Insta360 X6 in Lyon: instructions for use.
