Osmo Pocket 4P or GoPro HERO 12: Which one to rent?

If your shoot hits, wets or sticks to a support, take the GoPro. If it is held in the hand, talked to and the light is not ideal, the Osmo Pocket 4P is designed for that. These are not two versions of the same thing: they are two answers to two different problems, and the table below shows where the line passes.

What the pod brings, and what it costs

The gimbal corrects movements before recording, instead of correcting the image after the fact. The difference is especially visible on market shots and slow pans, and it does not crop the field, unlike software stabilization which needs margin to work.

Its backhand is mechanical. Three motors and joints are moving parts exposed to dust, shock and humidity. This is the reason why no camera made to be strapped to a helmet includes a gimbal. A nacelle also requires protection during transport: it travels in a rigid case, never at the bottom of a bag with keys, and it needs a few seconds to calibrate itself when turned on - a time that we don't always have when the scene begins. We will not publish any waterproof value for the 4P until we have verified it ourselves; what is certain is that the HERO 12 goes down to 10 meters without a box.

What GoPro can do that the other won't

The HERO 12's housing is sealed, its mounting tabs are foldable and integrated, and it accepts a 1/4-20 thread. This means it goes everywhere: helmet, chest harness, handlebars, board, dashboard. It records in 5.3K at up to 60 frames per second, lasts approximately 1 hour 30 minutes in this format at 30 frames per second according to GoPro measurements at 25°C, and offers a GP-Log profile for those who calibrate.

It also has a precise limit, which we document elsewhere: its long-set thermal resistance. An action camera is not made to shoot for forty minutes straight without ventilation.

The five questions that decide

• Is anyone speaking in the frame? If so, Pocket is better, and think about the sound before everything else.
• Will the camera be mounted on a support? If so, GoPro, without hesitation.
• Will there be water, sand, snow? The GoPro, with or without a box.
• Are you filming indoors or at the end of the day? The 1-inch sensor takes the advantage.
• Do you need to frame tight at a distance? The 3x telephoto lens is the only hardware answer.

The calendar, which sometimes decides for you

The Osmo Pocket 4P joined our fleet on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Its accessories are neither a separate rental nor an option to tick: the DJI Mic Mini 2 wireless microphone kit, the Osmo FrameTap, the mini tripod and the fill light are included at no extra cost, as are the 1 TB microSD card and the 25 W fast charger, as listed on its product page. We haven't had it in hand yet: this comparison is based on the design of the two devices and on published data, not on a field test.

If your shoot is before this date, the question does not arise, and the HERO 12 rents by the day or by the week — current price on its product page — with 1TB SanDisk microSD card, Enduro battery, dual charger, 25W fast charger and rigid carrying case in the package. The HERO 11 Black is worth a look if the logarithmic profile and HDR don't help you: both prices are on their respective product pages.
