Filming a video podcast together: the method
A two-person video podcast is shot with two cameras and separately recorded audio. The image, today, is no longer the problem: any recent camera placed on a tripod will do the trick. What an episode misses is the sound, the framing of the second camera and the memory card that fills up in the middle of the conversation. Here is the method, figures included.
Two cameras, two different functions
The first camera takes the wide shot: the two interlocutors, the table, a little air above their heads. It’s your safety plan, the one you’ll come back to every time an edit gets shaky. The second tight frame, alternating on the speaker.
Two rules of film grammar are enough for this montage to hold. First, never cross the imaginary line that connects the two interlocutors: if you film from both sides, they will appear to be looking in the same direction and the conversation will become unreadable. Then, separate the two points of view by at least thirty degrees — anything below that makes the cut more of a technical error than a change of shot.
Sound, the only real obstacle
No pocket camera correctly captures two voices sitting face to face. Its built-in microphone is omnidirectional: it brings ventilation, exterior circulation and room reverberation to the same level as speech. It’s impossible to fix in editing, because everything is recorded in the same track.
The solution takes two steps: one microphone per person, and a separate recording of the image. We detail the range patterns and pitfalls in the HF mic guide, written for wedding speeches but valid verbatim here. And if you are shooting outside, the windscreen is not a comfort accessory.
How long can you record?
This is the question that no one asks before, and everyone asks after. Let's do the math with verifiable figures. The GoPro HERO 12 Black records at a maximum of 120 Mb/s, or 15 megabytes per second, or approximately 54 GB per hour of filming.
- Our packs include a 1TB SanDisk microSD card: at maximum speed, this represents approximately 18 hours of recording per camera.
- Storage is therefore never the limiting factor. The autonomy is: count around 1h30 in 5.3K at 30 frames per second according to GoPro measurements at 25°C.
- For a session of two hours or more, power the cameras continuously with USB-C and connect them to the mains. A battery dying at the fifty-eighth minute costs the entire episode.
Synchronize the two images without hardware
Launch both cameras and the sound recorder, then clap your hands once in front of the lens. This snap creates a clear peak in both audio tracks and an identifiable image in both videos: in editing, you align to the peak and everything snaps, without specialist software.
Do it at the beginning and at the end. Over a long session, the internal clocks of two different devices drift slightly, and the second clap tells you by how much. The free software that we list in our editing comparison all know how to do this registration.
Which cameras to rent
Two cameras for a weekend of filming, today it's the HERO 12 and the HERO 11 Black , with current rates on their product pages. The second is deliberately simpler: on a fixed wide shot, it does exactly the same job as its replacement.

For a two-person podcast that is the accessory that decides everything, and it is already in the box: there is nothing to tick on its product page. We haven't tested it on a shoot yet: we will update this page when we do, with measurements and not promises.
One last production tip: shoot two episodes on the same day. The decor is set up, the sound is set, the frames are set – the second episode only costs the time to record it, and your rental is amortized twice.
