A birthday, a housewarming, a garden party: all occasions are good to take out the turntables. But what DJ equipment should you choose when you are not a professional? Between minimalist setup and club-style setup, there's a happy medium for every party — and renting lets you aim for exactly the right one. Here are our recommendations based on the number of guests and location.

The minimalist setup: party in an apartment (10 to 30 people)

For an evening with friends at home, there’s no need to bring out the heavy artillery. The intermediate setup: room or garden (30 to 80 people)

There, you have to go up a notch. The controller remains ideal, but combine it with real active speakers on stands. A subwoofer will make the dance floor vibrate, and a few floor-standing LED light shows are enough to create a club atmosphere. On the installation side, keep a few principles in mind:

  • Clearly define a separate DJ zone and dance floor;
  • Place the speakers high up, facing the track;
  • Do not stick them against a wall: the bass becomes excessive and blurs the clarity of the sound;
  • Place the subwoofer on the floor, in a corner of the room, where the walls will naturally amplify the bass;
  • Move the bar area away from the track to create two distinct atmospheres;
  • Outdoors, direct the sound away from the neighborhood.

The premium setup: large party (80 people and more)

Choosing between controller and turntables

The all-in-one controller is versatile, quick to set up and ideal for mixing digital files: it's the default choice for most parties. Vinyl turntables bring an incomparable character and warmth, perfect for a themed evening or an audience fond of “old-fashioned” mixing. There’s nothing stopping you from combining the two for the best of both worlds.

Whatever the tool, three gestures are enough to follow it up neatly: beatmatching, which you approach using the Sync button before learning to tune by ear; equalization, with the famous bass swap - we cut the bass of the incoming song, then we bring it back by cutting those of the outgoing song; and the effects, to be used sparingly, an echo at the end of a sentence or a progressive filter sufficient to create tension. Install the DJ station

Ergonomics above all

Place the controller or decks on a stable table, at waist height, to mix comfortably all evening. Check access to the sockets, anticipate the length of the cables and secure them to the ground with gaffer tape: a fall on the track can quickly happen. Add a little work lighting, discreet enough not to disrupt the lighting ambiance, but sufficient to avoid groping for your controls.

Connection order and soundcheck

Plug in the controller first, then the speakers, and turn on the latter last. You will avoid “pops” which damage the speakers. Then play a song that you know well and adjust the levels: two meters from the speakers, we should be able to talk to each other without shouting.

Lighting

A few devices are enough to transform a room: an LED derby to liven up the track, a wash bar to tint the walls, and why not a little light smoke, which makes the beams visible. The strobe is kept for moments of climax.

Manage volume and energy throughout the evening

The most common mistake amateur DJs make is to crank the sound loud from the start. Instead, follow this curve:

  • When guests arrive: background music, at a volume that does not force anyone to raise their voice.
  • Raise the level: increase the level in stages, on more catchy songs.
  • Heart of the evening: the reasonable maximum, with titles that bring everyone together on the track.
  • End of evening: go back down slowly, for the last dancers and the conversations.

The tempo follows the same logic: start slowly around 100 to 115 BPM, go up to around 120 to 128 BPM for house, and take some breaths before restarting. Prepare your pieces by atmosphere rather than improvising: this is what will allow you to manage the increase in energy without searching for your titles in a hurry.

Classic mistakes to avoid

  • Oversize: Too powerful speakers in a small space produce unpleasant sound.
  • Forget the cables: always bring extra extension cords and power strips.
  • Isolate the DJ: he must see the dance floor to adapt his music to the atmosphere.
  • Neglecting the sound test: do a test at least one hour before the guests arrive, empty room.
  • Improvise the playlist: a few hours of music classified by atmosphere will keep you from getting stuck.
